Chapter 17: The Doorstep

Officer Reyes had a notebook smaller than his palm and a pen he kept clicking.

"Ma'am, is your name Dana Kline."

"It is."

"Ms. Mercer is filing a harassment complaint against you. I'm here to take a statement from both parties."

Jenna stood on the porch with her arms folded and her chin up.

"She's been following me," she said. "Two weeks ago she followed me out of a bar."

"I walked to my car."

"You sat in the lot and waited until I came out."

"You came to my window and talked to me through it."

"Officer, do you hear how she says it."

The officer wrote without looking up.

"Ms. Kline. How many times have you had contact with Ms. Mercer."

"Three."

"When."

"The first time she came into my training room uninvited. The second time she followed me to the parking garage."

"And the third."

"This morning. She filed a complaint against me in the coordinator's office."

"She's lying," Jenna said.

"Ms. Mercer, let her finish."

"I'm not letting her finish. She's sleeping with my boyfriend and she's standing on her porch acting like a victim."

Wade had been behind her the whole time with his hands in his pockets.

He came up one step.

"Jenna."

"Don't."

"Stop talking."

"Wade."

"I said stop."

She turned on him.

"You brought me here."

"You asked me to drive you."

"You said you'd back me up."

"I said I'd come. I didn't say I'd lie."

The officer capped his pen.

"Ms. Mercer, I'm going to be straight with you. A harassment order needs a pattern of unwanted contact from her toward you."

"There is one."

"There isn't," Wade said.

"Wade."

"There isn't one. If you file this you sit in a room and explain why you showed up at her house with a police escort."

Jenna's mouth opened and closed.

"You're my brother."

"I know."

"You've always been on my side."

"I have been. This is the first time you're wrong."

She stood there breathing hard.

Then she went down the steps and got in her car and sat in it with her hands on the wheel for a long time before she started it.

The officer got in his car and left first.

Wade waited until the taillights were gone.
