Chapter 32: The Goalie Bet

I caught up with Logan at the bottom of the stairs.

"Don't," I said.

"She's holding a sign about you in a building with eighteen thousand people in it."

"I know."

"You're in a helmet and pads and you've got a game in four minutes."

"I know."

"Then go back down the tunnel."

He looked up at the stands.

The stewards had reached her. Two of them, and a third one with a radio, and a fourth one coming down the steps behind her.

She wasn't moving.

"Logan."

"I'm not going up there," he said.

"Say it."

"I'm not going up there."

"Good."

The stewards took the poster board out of her hands and folded it in half.

She argued with them. I could see her mouth moving from forty feet away.

Then two of them walked her up the steps and out the portal at the top and she was gone.

The sign went in a trash can by the tunnel.

The whole thing took ninety seconds.

Logan stood there with his helmet in his hand and watched it happen.

Then he turned around and went back down the tunnel.

The starter got hurt in the second period.

Nothing dramatic. He went post to post and came up wrong and grabbed the back of his own leg.

The trainer went out. The doctor went out. They walked him off.

The coach turned to the bench and pointed at Logan.

Logan stood up.

I was standing at the tunnel mouth with the kit bag.

He skated past me on his way to the net.

He didn't look at me. He didn't have to.

He was cleared. He'd been cleared for eight days, in writing, by the doctor and by me, and it was in the file and it was stamped.

He played the last thirty-one minutes of the national championship.

He made nineteen saves.

The last one was a glove save on a shot from the point with eleven seconds left and a screen in front of him.

The horn went.

The building came down.

I stood in the tunnel with the kit bag and watched the pile at center ice.

They handed out the trophy at center ice and the team carried it around the rink.

Logan skated one lap with it over his head and then he gave it to the captain and came off.

He came down the tunnel and stopped in front of me.

Both of us were shaking.

"Nineteen saves," I said.

"Nineteen saves."

"You won the bet."

He looked at me.

"What bet."

"The one you made in the training room in March."

He stood there with his helmet in one hand.

"I lost that bet," he said.

"You lost that bet."
