She went at dawn, while he slept.
Cangjue lay on his back with one arm flung over his head, his chest bare, and the little white heart beating behind the skin.
She bent and kissed his mouth.
He turned toward her in his sleep.
His hand closed on her wrist without waking, and she peeled his fingers off one at a time.
She put the note in her sleeve.
She dressed in her grey-green robe and pinned up her braid and went down the hundred and four steps alone.
The east court was quiet.
Fifty golden soldiers stood at the corners in the blue light, and none of them looked at her.
A page held open a round moon gate.
Beyond it, in a garden of bare plum trees, the Marshal sat at a stone table with a pot of tea.
He had set two cups out.
"Lady," said Jin Tianyu, and rose, and bowed.
He bowed the way a man bows to a queen he has already dethroned.
"I'm a laundress," said Luan.
"You are the Lady of the Frost Moon, who dropped a sword in the snow."
