"Yes," said Luan.

Cangjue stared at her.

"Yes, I'll stay," she said. "I've been waiting two weeks for you to ask properly."

"I asked in the middle of a road."

"You asked in the middle of a road in front of two thousand people. That's the best way."

He made a sound that was half laugh and half breath, and he swept her up into his arms.

She yelped.

He had one arm under her knees and the other behind her back, and her feet dangled in the air.

"Put me down."

"No."

"Where are you taking me?"

"Down," he said. "The mountain. I want to see what it looks like from underneath."

"There's a feast."

"Kuo will eat my share."

He turned and walked south, away from the torches and the cheering, along the empty road.

She laid her head on his shoulder and watched the palace shrink.

He walked.

He looked at every pine, every drift and every star.

Once he stopped altogether to put his hand flat on a rock beside the road and feel the frost on it.

"It's only a rock," she said.

"It's a rock I can touch."

He went on.

The moon was dark, but the snow held the starlight.

By the time they reached the first bend, the roar of the crowd had faded to a murmur.

Three miles below the gate the road dropped into a hollow of tall black pines.
