Chapter 24: The Frost Moon
The Hai bell rang over the Palace of Nine Chains, and Luan carried the tea up the stairs herself.
She wore her red wedding robe, with the white apron-sash tied over it for a joke.
Behind her the whole palace was still singing at the gate.
Every window was lit, and every lantern in the Demon Realm had a candle in it.
The new bedroom was at the top of the east tower.
It had a plain wooden bed, a copper tub, a bronze mirror, and one wide window standing open to the snow.
Cangjue sat on the edge of the bed in his black wedding robe, with his hair loose, watching the door.
She put the tray on the floor in front of him, as she had on the first night.
The black pot rattled once, because her hands were not quite steady.
"Your tea, Sovereign," she said.
He laughed.
It cracked halfway up, and he put his face in his hands.
"You are my wife," he said through his fingers. "And you are bringing me tea."
"I'm very good at it. Kneel."
He slid off the bed onto his knees on the boards.
She poured a cup and held it to his lips, and he drank, never looking away from her.
"Good," she said. "Now take my robe off."
His hands shook as he undid the sash.
He opened the red silk and let it fall.
The lamplight ran over her bare shoulders and her breasts and the soft curve of her belly.
"Mine," he whispered, not a command, just a word.
"Yours," she said. "Come and wash me."
The copper tub was already full and steaming.
She stepped into it and sank down to her shoulders with a long sigh, and he rolled up his sleeves and knelt beside it.
He took a cake of soap and a cloth.
