Chapter 15: Call the Police
Three hundred people turned from Annunziata's finger to my face.
I knew that look.
I'd seen it on eighty faces in a garden room, waiting to see the baker's girl run.
I folded the lease and put it in my handbag.
Then I stood up.
"Then call the police," I said.
Annunziata blinked.
"Right now," I said. "Somebody give her a phone. Call the police, Mrs. Corvino. Tell them three hundred thousand dollars went missing from your house in March. Then take them to Shore Road and open your safe in front of them."
Nobody moved.
The priest closed his book very slowly.
"Go on," I said. "I'll wait. I'll come with you. I'll stand in your study while they count."
Annunziata's mouth opened.
Nothing came out of it.
Every person in that church knew what was in a Corvino safe.
Every person in that church knew a Corvino had never once in sixty years called the police about anything.
"I don't need the police," she said finally. "Everybody here knows what she is."
"They know what you said she is," Elettra said from the altar steps. "For five years. In front of them."
Dora stood up beside me.
"Ma," she said, loud enough for the back row. "You don't even know the combination. Luca changed it when Papa died. You asked me for it at Christmas and I said no."
That was when the laughing started.
It started in the fourth row, with one of the wives who'd laughed behind her napkin in March.
It wasn't kind laughter.
It spread back through the pews.
