Chapter 20: The Gate of Aurelle

The vineyard farmhouse had one spare room.

The walls were so thin that Elior could hear a lancer snoring on the other side.

He shut the door.

He leaned his back against it.

Then he caught the front of the black coat and pulled Teodric to him by it.

"Here," he said softly.

"Turn around.

"Back to the door."

Teodric looked down at him in the candlelight.

"Elior, there are forty men in the next room."

"Then be quiet."

The duke's eyes darkened.

He let himself be turned until his shoulders rested against the plank.

Elior stood in front of him with his palms flat on the broad chest.

"Hands up," said Elior.

"Over your head.

"Flat on the wood.

"You don't move them, whatever I do."

The big hands went up, and the wide palms spread against the door.

He stood there with his arms stretched above him and his head tipped back.

He looked like a man who had waited a very long time for someone to tell him this.

Elior had to take a breath before he could continue.

"Tomorrow I walk up to that gate," he said.

"I might not come back.

"So tonight I want everything.

"Every bit of you, where I can see."

"You have it."

"I know."

He undid the black coat button by button.

He pushed it off the shoulders until it hung from the duke's raised wrists.

He pulled the shirt up and over, and left that hanging too.
