Chapter 15: Through the Floor
"Go to bed, Costa," I said to the floor.
"No."
"I mean it."
"I know you do. I'm staying here."
His voice came up through the iron slats, close and low, the way it had come up for seven months.
I had never been angry at a voice before.
I pulled my knees up under the green velvet and glared at the grate.
"You wrote me a note about yourself," I said. "In the third person."
"Yes."
"'Someone was kind to you last night. I hope you believed him.' That was you. You were the kind someone."
"Yes."
"I said it didn't bother me," I said, "and ate a pancake."
I heard how small that sounded now.
A sound came from the floor that might have been a laugh if it had any breath in it.
"It's not funny."
"I know. I'm sorry."
"'He is a lucky man.' You wrote that about yourself."
"I wrote it after you cried in my lap," he said. "I meant every word. I just meant it about me."
I put my fist against my mouth.
That note had made me cry in a good way, and now it made me furious in a worse one.
"You let me tell you it was my favorite," I said.
