Chapter 8: The Retraction

The position review for Maybelle Calhoun began at seven on Monday morning.

It was held in a hospital boardroom with a long oak table and a plate of untouched pastries.

Three members of the Grady Foundation committee sat on one side with a folder.

Maybelle sat on the other in her good cardigan, with her glasses chain in her fist.

I stood against the wall.

"Ms. Calhoun," the chairman said, without looking up. "Concerns have been raised about your fitness for a charge position."

"Which concerns?" Maybelle said.

"They've been raised."

Behind me the boardroom door opened.

A chief nurse in navy scrubs walked in and stood beside the table.

Another nurse followed her, then two more, then a night-shift pharmacist with his hair still flat from the pillow.

They kept coming.

Forty of them filled the room, in scrubs and clogs and hospital badges, and they stood along every wall without a word.

"We just got off shift," the chief nurse said. "We thought we'd sit in."

The chairman looked at the plate of pastries as if it had betrayed him.

"This review is tabled," he said, and left a full minute before the others.

Maybelle took my hand and squeezed it hard.

"Don't cry," she whispered. "You'll set me off."

On Wednesday I stood at the back of a hotel ballroom full of three hundred people in lanyards.

Raylan Whitfield walked up to the keynote microphone.

He was meant to give a talk about firewalls.
