Chapter 13: The Woman at the Door
Dorrit's fingers were cold and dry around mine.
"Are you sure?"
"I raised you, child."
"I know that coat, and I know that walk."
"She stood at the gate with one hand on the latch, like a woman waiting for a taxi."
My heart was going so hard I thought she could feel it through her skin.
"Why didn't you tell the police?"
"The deputy chief eats at her table every Christmas."
"I'm a housekeeper with a broken hip."
"I wanted to say it to you first."
Behind me, Jonas shifted his weight against the wall.
"Then we don't take it to the police yet," he said.
"No," I said.
"We take it to her."
I stood up and kissed Dorrit's forehead, and she hummed three flat notes and shooed me out.
"The Foundation holds its autumn donor lunch tomorrow at noon," I said in the hallway.
"I run the grant desk."
"I get a place card."
The next day the ballroom of the Minneapolis Club smelled of lilies and hot butter.
