Two hundred heads turned toward the steps where Jonas stood.
I felt the room do it, a rustle across a field.
Britta waited below me with her hands folded.
"His bullet is in Anders," she said.
"I have it from the deputy chief herself, and she is sitting right there."
A chair scraped at the front table.
A woman's voice, crisp and level, said, "Ms. Haugland, I can confirm a ballistic match on Mr. Tallgren's weapon."
"I'm obliged to ask him to come with me."
Jonas came up one step.
I put my hand flat against his chest without looking, and he stopped.
"Yes, he fired," I said into the microphone.
"He fired at the man who had my father by the throat."
"That man is dead on the third-floor landing of a walk-up on Johnson Street, and the woman who sent him is standing in front of you."
"Chief, I'll hand the phone to the detective on my father's case."
