I did not look at Mrs. Thornley.
I looked at Peter.
"Is it true?" I said.
"Yes."
He said it at once, with the note still in his hand.
"I was seven. I was in the back seat. I held you the whole way."
"You told me about the blanket."
"I told you what I remembered."
"You didn't tell me you were in the car."
"I didn't know I was. The car came back tonight, in this room, when I read Bantam."
"Tonight," I said.
"Miranda, I swear it."
I believed him, and that was the worst part.
If he had lied, I could have hated him cleanly.
"Do think about Monday, dear," said Mrs. Thornley, from the doorway.
She said it kindly, the way she once told me to mind the stove.
"Raymond will ask who found this blanket, and where, and in whose company."
