Chapter 23: Home on the Fourteenth
On the fourteenth of March, the lake still had ice along its edges.
The churchyard at the foot of the hill was white with frost.
Aunt Dot's stone was the plain gray one the laundress and the gardener had bought with their own back pay.
It said DOROTHY MARLOW, and two dates, and under them, in small letters, COOK.
Nobody had known what else to put.
I knelt in my good coat and laid a bunch of lavender at the foot of it.
Peter stood a few yards off, by the gate, in his navy EMS jacket.
The chief had put him back on the truck in January.
He had not said a word about it to me until I saw the patch.
"I'm twenty-five today," I said to the stone.
The wind moved the dry grass.
"I got my name back, Dot. They let me keep yours. It's Miranda Marlow Brightwell now, on the paper, in that order."
