Chapter 5: The Roses
It was Preston.
He came up the last flight of stairs with a bouquet of red roses wrapped in brown paper and the face of a man who had rehearsed.
"Cece," he said. "Thank God. I've been looking for you since nine."
"You're not allowed in this stairwell."
"I just need five minutes." He held out the roses. "I didn't know, Cece. I swear I didn't know who you were."
I looked at him.
"Who am I?"
"Martin Cranmer's daughter." He said it softly, almost fondly. "Six years, and you never told me. My mother googled you at breakfast. Do you know what the Cranmer office manages?"
"No."
"Eleven billion dollars."
"I didn't know that either," I said. "I haven't looked in seven years."
He smiled at that.
"That's what I love about you. You're so humble." He took a step closer. "I made a mistake, Cece. A stupid mistake with Danielle. But we can fix it. I'll annul it today. We can have the wedding again in June, at your father's place."
"You want to marry me again."
"I want to do right by you."
"On Saturday you wanted to do right by me with a certificate under my veil."
His smile flickered.
"That was before I understood what was at stake," he said.
It was the most honest thing he had said to me in six years.
I went past him down the stairs.
He followed, close behind, with the roses still held out in front of him.
I took the main staircase to the lobby, because I had a meeting on the second floor and was not going to be late for it.
He came down it behind me.
The lobby of the children's hospital is two stories of glass, with a fish tank, a gift shop and a long reception desk.
