Chapter 9: Terms

The elevator opened on the lobby, and neither of us moved.

His hand was at the back of my neck.

My fingers were wound in the front of his shirt.

The doors started to close again, and he reached out and held them without looking.

"Cecelia," he said against my mouth. "Tell me to stop."

"No."

"Tell me where."

"Home," I said. "Now."

He drove with one hand on the wheel and the other wrapped around mine on the seat between us.

Neither of us said anything.

At every red light he turned my palm up and put his thumb on the strip of tape across the cut, very gently, and every time I felt it low in my stomach.

Up three flights of stairs, he stayed one step behind me.

I could feel him there the whole way.

I got the key in the new lock on the second try.

The door had barely shut when he had me against it.

He kissed me properly this time.

It was slow and hard at once, his mouth opening mine, his hand sliding into my hair and tipping my head back to take more.

I pulled his jacket off his shoulders and dropped it on the floor.

"Your terms," he said roughly, into my throat. "No touching."

"I'm touching you."

"That's not what I meant."

"I know what you meant."

I got his shirt open, button by button, and put my palms flat on his chest.

He was hot, and solid, and his heart was going as hard as mine.

"I said you couldn't touch me," I said. "I never said I wouldn't touch you."

A sound came out of him that I felt in my own ribs.

"Then I'll wait," he said. "Until you tell me otherwise."

"Rafe."

"Say it."

"Touch me."

He lifted me off the floor.

I locked my legs around his waist, and he carried me down the short hall to my bedroom, kissing me the whole way.

He set me down on the edge of the bed and knelt on the rug in front of me.
