Chapter 10: The Laundry Cart

Lucian ended the call and looked at me.

"Two minutes," he said. "Maybe three."

I was already on my feet, pulling my skirt down, my phone in my hand.

I texted Tobias:

Penthouse.

He answered in four seconds.

Service door. Hold on.

"What are you doing?" Lucian said.

"Giving the ledger to the only man in this city who won't ask what's in it."

The service entrance of the penthouse opened onto a concrete landing.

Tobias was already there, in his driver's coat, pushing a laundry cart piled with the building's towels.

"Miss Delphine," he said with great dignity. "I took the liberty."

I put the ledger under a stack of bath sheets.

"Take it to Chestnut Street. Lock it in the garage."

"And if your grandmother asks?"

"Tell her I'm still her granddaughter."

He tipped an invisible hat and wheeled the cart into the freight elevator.

The doors closed.

At the front of the penthouse, a heavy fist hit the door three times.

Lucian was standing in the hall in his trousers, with his shirt open, and he looked at me with a face I had never seen on him.

"They'll arrest you," he said quietly. "Go out the back."

"No."

"Del."

"I'm not hiding in a laundry cart, Lucian. Open it."

He drew a breath.

He opened the door.

Four officers stood on the mat, and the two detectives from the lobby.

Behind them, in a camel overcoat, with a hand resting on the shoulder of his lawyer, stood Leopold Bulfinch.

"Mr. Bulfinch," the older detective said. "We have a warrant to search these premises for a ledger book and any files taken from the Weston residence."
