Prescott's office had been warmed up for the occasion.
The radiator hissed.
The window was shut.
On the desk sat a tray of coffee in china cups.
The man in the navy jacket stood at the window with his hands behind his back, studying the roof of my arena.
"Mr. Broten," Prescott said. "Miss Hedlund. Please sit."
Henrik did not sit.
I stood beside him, and his hand found mine and held on.
"This is a general manager from a professional club," Prescott said. "He has watched your film all season, Henrik."
The man turned.
He was fifty, with a gray crew cut and a bored face.
He had the manner of someone who bought and sold men by the pound.
"You skate well," he said to Henrik. "Better since the injury, the film says. The ankle looks sound."
"It's sound."
"We have a spot in January. A three-week tryout, and a contract if it goes the way I think."
