Chapter 21: Parade
The parade started at noon on Saturday, and by eleven there were half a million people on Main Street.
I wasn't on the route.
I was behind a metal barricade at the waterfront plaza, in my chef's coat, with my four cooks and Doran's mother.
A volunteer had stuck a laminated sign on the barricade that said STAFF VIEWING.
The first float rolled toward the plaza at twelve forty.
It was a long blue platform carrying the Cup, the whole street cheering along both sides of it.
Doran stood at the front in his white jersey and a suit jacket, and the Cup stood beside him on a pedestal.
On his other side stood a tall, pretty woman in a team jersey, smiling at the crowd.
She had very white teeth and a beautiful waist, and her smile was a little too still.
"There she is," said one of my cooks. "The talent."
"Don't," said Doran's mother. "You'll make her nervous."
Delphine Hartley walked beside the float in a black blazer, with a headset and a tablet, waving to nobody.
