I read Courtney's message four times in the stairwell before my knees gave out and I sat down on the concrete.

Tori sat next to me and said every bad word she knew.

"She's lying," she said. "You didn't fail anything. You haven't even finished the semester."

"The chat has two hundred people in it."

"Your mom's not in it."

"Nate's mom is. Half the donors are."

Footsteps hit the stairs below us, fast, and I knew whose they were before I saw him.

Mason took in my face, then Tori's phone, and read it standing up.

His jaw shut.

[I'll end her. I swear I'll end her.]

"Don't," I said.

"You heard that."

"I heard it from the other side of the building. Please say it out loud, instead of thinking it at me."

He breathed in through his nose.

"I want to take her phone and put it through the ice," he said.

"Okay. That's honest. Now don't."

"What do you want me to do?"

"Stand here," I said. "Be here."

He sat down on my other side, and Tori put her head on my shoulder, and for a minute that was the whole plan.

My email pinged at three.

I opened it with Mason's arm around my back.

Dear Ms. Ferris, the Office of Academic Standards has received a concern regarding the integrity of your coursework. You are required to retake the Economics 201 midterm under proctor on Friday at 10 a.m. A committee meeting will follow at 3 p.m. Please bring any materials that support your record.
