Chapter 20: Semifinal

The semifinal sold out by noon.

I stood at the glass behind the Wolves' bench in my Brantley hoodie, with Tori on my left in Nate's number seventeen shirt and her face painted blue.

Behind us, up in the booster seats, sat Courtney in a white coat, next to her father.

Her father was a big man with a silver tie and a face that expected people to move.

Two seats down from them, in a wool coat and half-glasses, sat the gray-haired chair of the committee.

Courtney had put her on the seating chart herself, as the faculty guest of honor.

I almost felt sorry for how much she had planned.

The Wolves took the first period hard.

Mason was everywhere, and Nate scored, and Tori screamed until she lost her voice.

When the buzzer sounded for intermission, the ice crew pushed out a podium with a microphone.

A spotlight swung to center ice.

Courtney came down the steps to the glass door in her white coat, and the whole arena clapped for the booster president.

She took the microphone from its stand.

"Good evening, Wolves fans!"

The roar came back.

"I have the honor of introducing someone very special tonight. Our captain is the heart of this team. And he is moving on to Boston." She smiled at the stands. "Mason, come out here. Bring your partner!"

The crowd went wild.

Mason skated slowly to the podium, with his helmet under his arm.

The arena was so loud that I caught only scraps of his thoughts.

He stopped a step away from Courtney.

"Courtney," he said, "I need that microphone."
