Chapter 23: Two Offers

Lila's POV

The general manager waited until the confetti was swept off the ice before he sat down with us in the visitors' lounge.

He put the folder on the table in front of Mason and tapped it twice again.

"Two years," he said. "A signing bonus, a housing stipend, and a line that says you finish your degree before your first road trip. The owner wrote that line himself."

Mason opened it and read every page.

He read it out loud to me, line by line, and I held the cold bottle from the cooler against my cheek and listened.

When he got to the end, he looked up.

"Out loud first," he said. "Lila. Do you want me to sign this?"

I had been waiting for him to ask since the night he left in the dark.

This time I did not say, do what you want.

"Yes," I said. "I want you to sign it. I want you to play in Boston. I think you'd be good at it, and I think you'd be miserable if you didn't try."

"What about you?"

"I'm going to tell you something I haven't told you." I put the bottle down. "I applied to the transfer program in Boston. The business track. Three weeks ago."

His mouth opened.

The general manager looked at the ceiling, politely.

"You didn't tell me," Mason said.

"I wanted to know if I'd get in on my own. Not because of you, or because of a team. If I didn't get in, you'd never have had to know." My voice shook. "I know it breaks the rule. I'm saying it first now."
