Chapter 18: Road Trip

I looked at my half-sister on the courthouse steps in the rain.

Twenty-four years old, left behind at the curb.

"Then we'll fill it every night," I said. "Do you need a ride?"

She stared at me.

Then she put her sunglasses back on and walked off up the hill alone.

Johnny opened the truck door for me.

"You offered her a ride," he said.

"She's still my sister."

"You're a better person than me."

"I know," I said. "I'm also hungry. Find me a drive-through."

Two weeks later the Glaciers flew to Boston for a game, and Lulu flew with us.

Johnny had asked the general manager, who'd said yes before he finished the sentence.

Lulu sat by the window in her purple mask and narrated the clouds.

The captain let her wear his headphones.

The backup goalie taught her a card game where you slapped the table, and she beat him four times.

"She's cheating," he complained.

"She's five in a week," Johnny said. "It's called strategy."

Johnny's mother lived in the North End, in a narrow brick house on a street so tight the truck from the airport scraped a mirror.
