Chapter 13: The Board Room

Nathan's POV

The boardroom was on the fortieth floor, and every chair at the long table had someone in it.

Margot's father sat at the head with his hands folded.

Gus sat halfway down the right side with no sandwich, which told me how bad it was.

Nigel sat opposite me beside a lawyer in a gray suit, with his left hand flat on the wood so the ring caught the light.

The board chair held up a stack of photographs.

"Mr. Clery sent us these at seven this morning," she said. "I would like to hear from the people in them before I hear from him."

She passed the top one down the table.

It was a lobby camera still, gray and grainy.

Margot in a trench coat at two in the morning, and me beside her, holding the elevator door.

The door at the end of the room opened.

Margot walked in wearing a gray suit and carrying no papers.

"Sit, Margot," her father said.

"No, sir. I'll stand."

She stood at the foot of the table, where all sixteen of them could see her, and she did not look at me.

"Fourteen months ago I married Nigel Clery at a Chicago courthouse," she said. "I told no one here. This firm bars spouses from its projects, and he asked me to wait."

Nobody moved.

"In March I found out he was seeing another woman. I filed for divorce that week. He says he never signed, and he hasn't."

Nigel smiled at the table and shook his head slightly.
