Chapter 6: What Justine Brought
The knock came at nine that night, three quick taps, and I knew whose they were.
Justine stood in the hallway with rain in her hair and her mascara gone.
"I told the doorman I was your wife," she said. "He let me up."
"Justine."
"Five minutes. Please."
I let her in because it was raining and because I wanted to say it to her face.
She stood in the middle of the living room holding a white envelope in both hands.
"It's five thousand," she said. "From the company. It's a start. Nigel will move the deed to a trust once the loan's seasoned, I swear, he promised me."
"Five thousand."
"It's what I could get today."
"It's less than three percent."
"Nate, he pushed me." Her chin shook. "He said the bank would only do it in his name. I didn't know how to say no. You know how he talks. You've always known how he talks."
"I know how you type," I said.
She blinked.
"At the sales table. With one hand on my knee and the other on your phone. I know exactly how you type."
She put the envelope down on my counter and came across the room, and before I understood it she had her hands on my face and her mouth on mine.
She tasted like rain and the cough drops she took before every meeting.
It was five years of habit and it went through me for a second.
Then I took her wrists and moved her back.
"No."
"You still love me."
"I loved a person who held my hand at a table and meant it," I said. "I don't know who you were this week."
