Chapter 14: The Resignation Letter

The black phone buzzed on the desk, and neither of them moved.

Ha-jun got there first.

He read the message with Seung-ho standing at his shoulder, close enough to feel the warmth of him and not touching.

"Friday, eight o'clock. The house in Samcheong-dong. Bring Lim Ha-jun, and bring the file. Let us discuss his future like adults."

Ha-jun turned the phone face down on the wood, exactly the way Seung-ho used to.

"He doesn't get an answer today," he said.

"He'll call again."

"Then let it ring."

Seung-ho looked at him.

"I'll resign," he said. "I'll write it now. The CEO will have it by morning."

"Write what you want," Ha-jun said. "I'm going back to bed."

He did, and he lay with his face to the wall in the gray sheets that smelled of both of them.

He was too angry to sleep and too tired to stay angry.

Behind him he heard a pen scratching on paper for a long time.

Then the lamp went out.

Then there was only the sound of a big man lying down on a hard floor, carefully, trying not to be heard.

Ha-jun lay with his eyes open for an hour.

At two in the morning he rolled over.

Seung-ho lay on the boards beside the bed in his sweatpants, with his own suit jacket for a blanket and his arm under his head.

He wasn't asleep.

His eyes caught the light from the window.
