Chapter 19: Clause Fourteen
The meeting room on Starline's top floor had a table for twenty and a window full of gray morning.
Aurora's lawyer sat at one end with a leather folder, a man in his fifties.
Park Mi-sook sat at the other end, with two Starline attorneys at her elbows.
Ha-jun took the chair in the middle, on the long side, where both of them had to turn their heads to look at him.
Seung-ho stood against the wall behind him, in the gray suit, with his hands folded.
"Mr. Lim," the lawyer began. "Under clause fourteen of your contract, publication of images showing a relationship constitutes confirmation. Aurora hereby exercises its right to acquire your contract at the stated rate. The papers are ready for signature."
He slid a thick stack down the table.
It stopped in front of Ha-jun.
Ha-jun did not touch it.
"Show me where it says that," he said.
"I beg your pardon?"
"Publication. I just read my contract twice. The word is 'confirmed.' It says confirmed by the artist or by Starline in writing." He looked down the table. "I have confirmed nothing. Starline has confirmed nothing. Your client posted two men kissing and put a caption on it."
"The public will draw its own conclusion."
"The public can draw what it wants. The contract can't."
One of the Starline attorneys cleared his throat, and Park lifted two fingers to stop him.
She was smiling very faintly at the ceiling.
"Here are my terms," Ha-jun said. "Clause fourteen comes out of my contract, in writing, today. Then I sign a new five-year renewal with Starline, with the clause gone. Aurora gets nothing."
