Chapter 11: Rope

"Just warm," I said again, at eleven o'clock that night, and I took the velvet rope off the brass post.

Sam lay on the long bench in Gallery Four, naked, with his hands above his head.

He had not been told to put them there.

He had done it as soon as he saw the rope in my hand.

The red exit sign lit his body in slashes.

I could see the broad chest and the white scar, and the long hard length of him already lying against his stomach.

"This is the museum's rope," he said, in a low voice. "It is a reproduction."

"It's velvet. It's the strongest thing in the building after you."

"I could break it."

"You could."

"I will not."

"I know."

I knelt on the bench behind his head.

I took his wrists, one over the other, and looped the rope around them three times.

Then around the iron end-post of the bench, and tied it off with a knot my father taught me for sailboats.

His fists flexed once, testing.

The rope held.

His eyes went shut, and a shudder ran through him.

"Today in that room," I said, "you made me come in front of thirty people."

"You did not stop me."

"I didn't want to."

I walked my fingers down his chest.

"So now you're going to learn what it's like."

"You're going to lie here and take it, and you're not going to come until I say."

"Do you understand?"

"Yes."

"Say it."

"I will not come until you say."

"Good boy."

I felt the shiver go through his whole body, and I smiled.

I stood on the cold marble beside the bench, and I took off my clothes slowly, so that he could watch.

I took my time with the buttons of my blouse.

I let the skirt fall around my ankles and stepped out of it.
