Chapter 14: The Day Off
On Friday night Sam cooked in my kitchen in nothing but my apron.
It was his night off, the first one in six weeks, and it was seven o'clock.
He had walked up Wickenden Street from the bus with two paper bags of groceries and a look of grave purpose.
I had let him in.
He had taken off his clothes in the hall and put on the only apron I own, a yellow one with lemons.
"I am told this is a thing people do," he said.
"Who told you?"
"A man at the market. He said, take off your shirt and a woman will watch you chop an onion."
"He's right."
"He was selling onions."
I sat on the counter with my legs swinging and a glass of seltzer in my hand, and I watched an emperor chop an onion.
He did it very well.
The knife went through in clean even strokes, and the long muscles of his back moved under the strap of the apron.
His ass was bare and round and pale in the lamplight.
There was a pan on the front burner with butter melting in it.
The apartment smelled of garlic and the first cold of autumn coming in through the window over the sink.
I put my seltzer down.
"Stop cutting."
He stopped, with the knife in his hand.
"Put it down."
He laid the knife on the board.
"Turn around."
He turned, and the apron bib hung off him, and below the lemons something had begun to lift the cloth away from his body.
I looked at it for a long moment.
"Come here."
He stepped between my knees.
I took the apron strings at his hip and pulled one, and the bow came undone, and the lemons fell to the floor.
He stood naked in front of me, hard and heavy, with onion on his fingers and a flush in his cheeks.
