Chapter 10: The Ice Cave

The storm struck the cloud boat an hour before landfall.

Wen Qi flew ahead through the white wind and found a cave in the cliffs of the shore.

It was a long blue throat of rock.

The boat settled on the ice at its mouth.

Han and Mo carried the furs inside.

Mo lit a fire with a flick of his fingers, a small red flame above a pile of driftwood.

It warmed the cave to the color of apricots.

Outside, the wind screamed.

Inside, it was almost quiet.

"We stay here until it passes," Han said.

"Yes."

"Wen Qi will scout the tomb road."

"Yes."

"And I'm going to sit down and not be a marshal for a few hours."

"That's the best idea you've had all week."

Han sat on the furs, pulled off his boots, and found Mo kneeling in front of him, looking up with a particular, bright, quiet expression.

"What?" Han said.

"You keep taking the lead."

"Somebody has to."

"I like it." Mo's hands settled on his ankles. "But I wondered, tonight, if you'd let me take it."

"You always take it."

"I've been asking. Tonight I'd like to take all of it."

Han's mouth went dry.

He knew what Mo meant, and that was the strange thing.

He had been afraid of this his whole life: to be the one tied down, the one with no choices.

And now, looking into those red eyes, he found that he wanted it so badly his hands shook.
