Chapter 21: Ember
Hannah walked down the center aisle with her chin up and her knuckles white around the sketchbook.
Every head turned to follow her, and none of them turned away.
She stopped in front of the long table, but she didn't face the investigator.
She faced Whitney.
"My name is Hannah Averill," she said. "I worked on this floor for four years."
Whitney's mouth opened, and nothing came out.
"You said I'd never survive in this business," Hannah said. "I want you to know I'm doing fine."
"I get up at four."
"I make three hundred croissants before seven."
"It turns out I'm very good at it."
Somebody in the back laughed, then clapped a hand over his mouth.
"I also drew your lamp," Hannah said.
Her voice was steady, and her hands were not.
"You know the rest."
She breathed.
"That's all. I've been carrying it for two years, and I wanted to put it down where you could see me do it."
She turned and walked back up the aisle.
