I showed Knox the message before I answered it.
Rule six.
He read it sitting up in bed with his hair flat on one side.
"Could be a troll," he said.
"Could be."
"Could be Chad."
"Could be."
He handed the phone back.
"You want to go."
"I want to go."
"Then I'll walk you there and sit at the shop with my phone face up."
She picked the place. The coffee shop on Central.
The same one where I drew a moose on a napkin two years ago.
She didn't know that. I didn't tell her.
She was already at a corner table when I came in, with both hands around a mug she wasn't drinking.
She was thirty-three, small, with a brown ponytail and a gray college sweatshirt.
She looked like someone's kind older sister.
She did not look like anyone Chad Brixton would have married.
"I almost didn't come," she said, when I sat down.
"Me too."
"You're smaller than I thought. From the drawings I thought you'd be a moose."
I laughed, and she smiled for the first time, a quick one.
"I'm from here," she said. "Burnsville. I moved back home after the divorce. Three years ago."
