Chapter 19: Ticket Line

I waited until Knox came home to play it.

Rule six.

We sat on the bed with my laptop between us and the radiator ticking.

I dragged the bar to minute 41.

A studio. Chairs creaking. Somebody unwrapping a protein bar.

Then the cohost's gravel laugh.

"You really posting the shop tomorrow?"

"Her name, the book cover, the shop window," Chad said. "Clicks are clicks."

"What if somebody actually goes in there?"

"Then that's next week's episode, bro."

Knox's hand closed slowly on the blanket.

There was more.

"Honestly, the boyfriend sounds fine," the cohost said. "Sandwiches and stuff."

"Doesn't matter. Needy sells." Chad yawned into the mic. "Half my buyers have girlfriends who'd be thrilled if they just texted back. They pay four ninety-nine to hear they're allowed not to. Find me another moose after this one."

I stopped it.

Knox didn't say anything for a while.

Then he got up, took his phone off the dresser, and found the Alpha Hour booking number on Chad's website.
