Chapter 13: Twice

I walked out of the shed with the notebook inside my coat and did not look back.

Casper said my name once from the doorway.

I kept walking until the dock boards stopped and the road began.

Dean lived over the hardware store on Main, in two rooms with a folded soccer net against the wall.

I rang his buzzer before I had decided anything.

He opened the door in his socks, with a game on mute behind him.

"Len? What happened? Where's your car?"

"At the bakery."

"You walked here?"

"Move."

He moved.

I sat down on his couch, took out the notebook, and put it on the coffee table between us.

"Read it," I said. "From the first page. Don't talk."

"Is that Casper's?"

"Read."

He read it standing up, and then sitting, and then with his elbows on his knees and both hands flat on the pages.

I watched his face the whole time.

He stopped at the third entry and read the long line under it twice.

His neck, which was always sunburned, went gray.

When he got to the last page he shut the book and sat without moving.

"He came to me," Dean said.

"Who did?"

"Casper. Twice."

My stomach turned over.

"When?"

"The first time was a week after that third dinner. He asked me to drive out the lake road with him and look at a cottage." Dean's voice was thick. "I said you'd been through enough. I said he was jealous of Brett and it was making him say things."
