Chapter 12: Three Lies
"The boxes are in your garage," Kou said. "The right ones. The size you picked. I told you the lot was bad, and it wasn't."
His voice was steady, and his hands were flat on either side of his plate.
"Why?" I said.
"I wanted another week." He swallowed. "I'm sorry."
Tanner pushed his chair back an inch.
"The doors were never wrong," he said. "They've been done since the second week. I took them off and put them in the garage."
Kou turned and looked at him.
"You did?" Kou said.
"Yes."
"The doors?"
"I said they needed to cure. They didn't," Tanner said.
"Wait," Mikko said.
He had put both hands in his curls.
"Wait. The wall."
"What about the wall?" Tanner said.
"There's no soft spot." Mikko laughed, high and helpless.
"I pressed a wall until it screamed. It's solid. It's the best wall I've ever seen. I made it up in front of her because I couldn't think of anything else, and I was so proud of it."
Nobody laughed.
"It was a week," Mikko said. "I only wanted a week."
