Chapter 23: Sister
"Mine," I said.
Three men stood on my porch with three duffel bags and waited.
"The spare rooms are for your things," I said. "My bedroom is for the rest. Come in before the neighbors start taking notes."
"That's not a room," Mikko said. "That's an answer to a different question."
"It's the only one you're getting."
"I'll take it," Kou said, with great dignity, and picked up his bag and went in.
By Saturday night the spare rooms held three duffels, and nothing else, and no one had slept in either one.
My sister called Saturday morning.
"I'm coming to dinner tomorrow," she said. "I'm bringing nothing. I'm bringing questions."
On Sunday the three of them made a table.
They did not mean to.
Tanner took the old pantry door he had saved from the demolition, stripped and sanded in the garage, and laid it across two sawhorses.
Kou spread a white cloth over it and pressed the seams flat with the side of his hand.
Mikko set out five places and stood back with his arms folded.
"It's a door," he said. "We're eating off a door."
"It's a table with a past," Tanner said.
"It has a hole where the knob was."
"That's where the bread goes."
