Chapter 8: Kitchen Floor
He had cleared the kitchen.
The tools were gone, the buckets were gone, the drop cloths and the dust were gone.
The only light came from one lamp he had carried in from the living room and set on the island.
The new tile ran from the mudroom door to the wall in clean pale rows, grouted and sealed and shining.
On it, in the middle of the floor, lay a gray moving blanket folded double.
Kou stood beside the blanket with his hands clasped in front of him, in a clean white shirt.
"It's ready," he said. "The floor. It can be walked on now. I wanted you to be the first."
I stepped out of my work shoes.
The tile was cool under my bare soles, and perfectly even, and it ran straight to every wall.
"Kou, it's beautiful," I said.
"Thank you."
"You did this."
"I did the floor," he said. "That's not what I wanted to do right."
He took off his glasses, folded them, and set them on the island by the lamp.
Then he crossed to me, and I saw that his hands were steady.
"Last time I was in a hurry," Kou said. "I was afraid you'd change your mind. I would like to do it slowly. If you let me."
"I'll let you."
"Take off your dress, Britta."
It was the way he said my name, I think.
He said it as though he had been practicing.
He said it as though it were the best word he knew.
I took off my dress.
He watched every inch of it come off, and he did not blink.
I stood in my bra and underwear on the cool tile.
He undid the bra himself, with the same neat fingers that set tile, and let it fall.
"Lie down," he said. "On the blanket. On your back."
