Chapter 11: The Whole Point

Marta's POV

He came home a little before midnight.

I was still at the kitchen table with the statements spread out around me.

He stopped in the doorway with his tie in his fist.

There was lipstick on his collar, a small pink smear, and I looked at it and then I looked at the numbers.

"She kissed my cheek at the door," he said. "Once. I let her."

"You don't owe me a report."

"I think I do."

"Do you like her touching you?" I said, still looking at the page. "Be honest. You went to dinner with her three times. You've heard her say she'd love you out loud."

"Marta."

"Because I'm trying to work out if I'm a weapon you're keeping in a drawer, or something else."

He crossed the kitchen and took the pencil out of my hand.

"Look at me."

I looked.

His face was gray with tiredness, and his hands weren't steady.

"She knows who fired it," he said. His jaw worked. "Or she paid for it."

"I know," I said. "I found the money this morning."

"I know you did." He set the pencil down.

"I put two men on that garage at midnight."

"I'm going to get her on tape. That's the plan. You said it was a good one."

"I said I couldn't tell where it stopped."

"It stops at your door."

His voice cracked on the last word.

"Fourteen months ago my father wanted Irene," he said.

"She was prettier, and she smiled at him across the table."

"I'd met her once at a summit."

"She took me into a corridor and told me her sister was dull, and I'd be happier with her."

"She said that?"

"In a whisper, with her hand on my chest." He shook his head. "I didn't like how good she was at it."
