Chapter 14: The Inventory

The condo smelled like nobody lived in it.

Fourteenth floor, glass on two sides, the city laid out below.

I had not been inside since the night of the lamb.

The lamb was still in the refrigerator.

"I didn't touch anything," Nolan said from the doorway.

"Except that," I said, and held up the bag of ruined meat.

"Except that," he agreed.

He had brought a roll of masking tape, a marker, and forty flattened boxes under one arm.

I had brought a pizza and a clipboard.

"Rules," I said.

"Every object gets a label: mine, yours, or sell."

"You don't get to say 'yours' about anything I point at."

"What if you point at something I paid for?"

"Then it's mine, and you can sue me."

The corner of his mouth moved.

"Kitchen first," I said.

We worked.

He carried the stand mixer to the counter and read the tape aloud.

"Yours," he said.

"I got it for you."

"You got it for me to make you bread," I said.

"Sell."

"Sell," he agreed, and wrote it.

He did not argue once.

That was what made it hard.

The espresso machine was his, and he labeled it SELL before I opened my mouth.

The couch was ours, and he labeled it SELL.

When I said the blue armchair was mine, he wrote HERS in marker, and then, below that, in smaller letters, HERS BEFORE ME.
