Chapter 16: Single Combat
Both lands came to watch Jory fight.
The lions stood in a long gold curve on the left of the Sun Stone, and the wolves in a grey one on the right.
The grass between them had been trampled flat into a ring.
Hadrick Vokes stood in the middle of it with a stone-headed spear and his cloak thrown back, and he looked delighted.
Jory walked in from the lion side with an ash-wood spear he had hardened in the Hollow fire that morning.
The tip was black and hard.
Bix had wanted to come.
He sat on Lucan's shoulders now at the edge of the ring, one fist in the king's hair, glaring at the Alpha with his whole small face.
Lucan did not look at the fight.
He looked at Jory.
He had said what he had to say that morning, in the dark, with his hands on both sides of Jory's face: "Do not ask me to stay out of it."
"I'm asking," Jory had said.
"Why?"
"Because he's mine to finish. And because if you go in, he wins."
Lucan had been silent for a long time.
Then he had said, "I hate it."
"I know."
"I will not move."
He had not moved since.
"Little wolf," Hadrick said, pleasant and loud. "You've grown a tongue. Let's see what's behind it."
