Chapter 11: What He Signed

I was standing in the garage when his truck came up the drive.

I'd laid the copied pages across the hood of my car, in order, with a rock from the garden holding down the day-four sheet.

Griffin cut the engine and sat there for a long second.

Then he got out and walked over and looked down.

He didn't have to read it.

I watched his eyes find his own signature, and every drop of color went out of his face.

"I can explain," he said.

"Then explain."

He sat down on the step to the mudroom, a tall man folding himself.

"You signed it," I said. "Say why you signed."

"Mom was standing there," he said. "She said not today. The contract was coming Monday."

His voice was a rasp.

"And you were in the next room screaming that he wasn't yours, and I thought, if you were right, I couldn't stand it."

He looked up at me with red eyes.

"And if you were wrong, nobody would ever have to know I'd asked."

The garage was very quiet.

"You let them keep me there forty-one days," I said.

"I thought you'd get better and it wouldn't matter."

"I was better the minute I walked in. I was perfectly sane. I was the only one."

"I know."

"You told me I was wrong. You let me thank you for taking me home."

"Alana."

"And Shanna?" I said.

He closed his eyes.

"She was on the back stairwell," he said. "She heard the doctor. A week later she came to the house with a casserole, and she told me what she'd heard, and she said she'd never say it to anyone. She said she didn't need much. Four thousand a month."
