Chapter 18: Fon
Ton went forward and the guard caught his arm and held him.
Fon looked up.
"Ton."
"I'm here."
"You were gone."
"I came back."
She got her hand up to her braid and pushed it back off her face.
Her lips were cracked and there was a red mark on her cheek where one of the guards had held her.
"Are you hurt?"
"No."
"You're lying."
"I'm tired. That's all."
She looked past him at the room.
At the lamps. At the bed. At the man in it.
At Bua.
"Who's that?"
"Nobody," Ton said.
"His Highness," said the thing in the bed.
Fon's eyes went wide and stayed wide.
"Ton."
"Don't look at him."
"Ton, what's wrong with his face?"
"Don't look at him."
She looked at the floor instead.
