Chapter 32: The Lotus Thief
They took the lotus back to the lake in the third month.
The King rode as far as the forest edge and stopped there, because his legs were still weak.
Bua carried the stalk and Ton carried the bud, both hands on it, neither cutting it, the whole way in.
The Yaksa let them through without a word.
The Hamsa came down out of the sky and looked at them and went up again.
The Makara watched from the deep water and didn't move.
On the island Chan Bua took the bud out of their hands and set it in the pool.
The stalk went in after it.
The bud opened the moment it touched the water.
Both blooms. East and west. White and warm, and the light came up out of them and lay on the grass.
