Chapter 13: Kendra's Version
I did not put the lid back.
I stood up with the strip of paper in one hand and the Polaroid in the other.
"How long?" I said.
"Since October of freshman year." Kendra stayed against the door. "Before you ever met him."
"You were at the mixer. You were sitting right there."
"I was in the third row."
She said it evenly.
She had been ready for this question for two years, I thought, and had practiced the answer in the dark.
"Tell me about the letter," I said.
"It came on a Friday morning. No stamp, just your name, so I took it up with the rest of the mail."
"You opened it."
"The flap wasn't even glued." She shrugged. "I read it standing in the mailroom, and then I read it again."
"And then you cut the bottom off."
"It was the most beautiful thing I'd ever held, and it wasn't for me." Her voice stayed flat. "That same week Brady's father told him that if he ever dated a girl on financial aid, he'd lose the tuition, the car and the house."
"So you gave my letter to your boyfriend."
"I gave him a way for nobody to look at me." She finally looked at the strip in my hand. "You were the way."
I had thought I would scream.
Instead I heard myself ask, quite calmly, "Did you cry at the mixer?"
"Yes."
"Because you were sorry?"
"Because you were so happy, Cor." She laughed, once, and it broke in the middle. "You had your hands over your mouth. I'd never seen anyone want something that much."
