Chapter 19: The Rewrite

He didn't zip it.

He sat back on his heels with the gray coat in his hands.

"You know," he said.

"Phoebe told me. Phoebe tells me things at six o'clock, with tea." I shut the door behind me. "You went to the dean."

"I did."

"You didn't ask me."

"No."

"You decided what I could afford."

"I decided what I could afford," he said quietly. "It was mine to spend."

"It was never only yours." I crossed the room. "You wrote me a letter once and let me read it two years late, and now you've done it again, only this time it's your whole life."

"I'm sorry."

"Don't be sorry. Answer me."

I knelt in front of him on the floor, so we were the same height.

"What do you want?" I said. "Not what you owe. What do you want?"

He looked at me for a long time.

"I want to stay," he said. "I want to be in the room tomorrow when you read it. I want to be somewhere that has a lamp that doesn't stay on."

"Then stay."

"I have no job, Cora. I have a month of rent and a suitcase."

"You have a pencil." I took the coat out of his hands and put it on the bed. "And I'm asking. That's the difference. I'm asking."

His eyes were bright behind the glasses.

"Then yes," he said.

I took the pencil and the notebook from the table behind him, and I put both in his hand.

"Write it down."

"The terms."

"Overruled. The terms were mine, and I'm breaking them." I sat back on my heels. "Write the end of the speech. The real one, for tomorrow. Brady reads whatever you give him."

He laughed, and it came out unsteady.

Then he bent over the notebook, and I watched the slanted letters run across the page in his hand.
