Chapter 6: Ask Him About Ethics

Kendra came back at one in the morning and sat on the end of my bed with her shoes still on.

"Nothing," she said. "I'm so sorry, Cor."

"You got into his phone?"

"For twenty minutes, while he was in the shower at the frat house." She held up her hands. "He has two thousand voice memos and no drafts. No documents, no notes, nothing he ever typed."

"None?"

"He doesn't write anything. He just talks to it." She pulled off one shoe and held it. "I took pictures of the contacts so you can look. I didn't know what else to do."

She had photographed forty names on her own phone and sent me the pictures.

I scrolled until my eyes hurt.

There were forty people I knew and nobody I didn't.

"It's okay," I said. "Thank you."

"Tomorrow I'll try his laptop."

"Don't. If he catches you, he'll come after you too."

"Let him," Kendra said.

She hugged me with her chin on my shoulder, and she smelled like the lavender detergent she'd used since freshman year.

I hugged her back, and I fell asleep before she left the room.

The next day was Saturday, and I had arranged to meet Micah Ketterman in the Union at noon.

I had texted him from the only number I had, the one in the seminar syllabus Phoebe forwarded.

He wrote back in under a minute: Not in the library. Somewhere with people.

I thought it was cowardice.
