Chapter 14: The Stones Remember
The priestess would not hear a stone's testimony inside walls.
"The Goddess does not speak under a roof," she said, and thirty packs followed a cart out into the grey dawn.
The Courtyard of Stones was empty of its crowd.
Frost lay on the flags, and before the altar a ring of black stones was set into the paving.
For a thousand years every pyre of the realm had stood on them, though none had burned in forty.
I had walked past them three weeks ago in a leather coat and had not let myself look.
The Greywater riders set the cart down at its edge.
Anwen could not sit, so my father held her up from behind with his arms under hers, and he was weeping without a sound.
"Come, child," she said.
I walked to the ring, and my legs did not feel like mine.
Rhydian was three paces away with Eirik held between two guards at his back.
He had not spoken since the hall.
