"Get up," I said to Leoric.
He did not move. His fingers were still knotted in my cloak.
"Get up, and listen to me, because she has told you half of it, and she told you the half that helps her."
Perdita's smile stayed where it was, but I saw one finger lift from her lap.
"Luna, you're distressed."
"The rest is for the King."
I took Leoric by the wrists and hauled him to his feet, and he came.
He was lighter than I remembered. His shirt hung on his ribs.
"Your wolf is not asleep," I said. "He is dying."
His mouth opened.
"A rejection wounds the one who is left. It bleeds him a little every day, and nothing heals it."
He flinched, because he knew.
"Lost words. Lost the shift. A season, maybe less, and he goes out like a lamp."
"No."
"Ask her how she knows the cure."
His eyes went slowly to the Luna's chair.
