Chapter 17: Tongyeong
The ferry to Saryang Island left Tongyeong at ten past seven.
It carried four fishermen, a crate of live crabs and the Devil of Busan, holding his side.
Seo-jin stood at the rail in a borrowed coat.
He had refused to stay in bed.
"The stitches will hold," he had said.
"They're my stitches," Si-on had said. "They'll hold if you stop walking around."
"I will sit on the ferry."
He did not sit.
Du-sik, with his arm strapped to his chest, sat on the crab crate and ate dried squid and kept one eye on the wake.
Nobody followed them.
Si-on watched the sea for forty minutes anyway.
The island was a green hump with a stone jetty and thirty houses, and a single road that went round it once.
They found the house at the end of the road by the sound of a sewing machine.
It was a small grey cottage with a net drying on the wall.
The window stood open, and behind it a woman bent over a machine.
She wore a faded cardigan that was not red, and her hair was tied back by a pencil.
Si-on stopped dead in the lane.
He had planned something to say, on the ferry, on the stairs, in the dark.
