Chapter 8: The Envoy
Seo-jin had not felt fear since he was twelve years old.
At nine on Tuesday morning he stood in the empty bar of Blackwater and examined his own hands for the cause.
They were steady.
He turned them over anyway.
There was a faint red mark on his left thumb, in the shape of a boy's teeth.
He had looked at it a dozen times since Friday.
Du-sik stood by the door with a paper bag of buns.
"The envoy is here," he said.
"Send him in."
"Is the kid still asleep?" Du-sik said.
"Yes."
"Good." Du-sik chewed. "Because I don't think you want him hearing this."
The envoy came in alone.
He was a neat man of fifty in a pearl-grey suit, with a pearl-grey smile.
He carried a small silk box and set it on the bar like a gift.
"Mr. Gwak," he said. "Mr. Hong sends his respect."
"Mr. Hong sends a man to my club at nine in the morning," Seo-jin said.
He sat down on the stool across from him.
"That is not respect."
"Mr. Hong is an impatient man," the envoy said. "He has asked me to enquire after a boy."
"I know a lot of boys."
