Chapter 12: The File

The director's office had one window, a steel desk, and a chair for each of us.

Eamon sat in his and kept his bandaged hand on his knee.

I sat in mine with my sweater on inside out.

The director looked at a tablet, not at us.

"At 11:42 last night the range house camera recorded a violation of rule nine," he said. "That camera is on the security feed. It does not go to your server, Mr. Kerr."

Eamon's jaw moved.

"I told her it did," he said. "That's on me."

"It's on both of you."

I waited for the speech about dissolving teams.

The director set the tablet down and folded his hands.

"I'm not going to dissolve Weapons Team Two," he said. "I'm going to note it in the file and let it stand."

Eamon looked at me and then back at the director.

"Sir?"

"Your ramp is the best result this program has produced in two years, and the team that made it stays together. That's all I'm going to say."

He stood, which meant we did too.

"One more thing, Nine."

"Yes?"

"Have you answered the letter?"

I hadn't told him about any letter.

The coordinator had said she was scanning it for the liaison.

"No," I said. "I was told not to."

"Good," he said. "Keep that up."

He sat down again and picked up his pen, and we were dismissed.
